UN supported Belarusian resolution on co-ordination of efforts to combat human trafficking

The Third Committee of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly adopted by consensus the traditional Belarusian resolution: Improving Co-ordination of Efforts to Combat Human Trafficking, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry reports

“The resolution, which has been adopted at the UN General Assembly since 2006, is a practical contribution to the development of the initiative of the President of the Republic of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, at the 2005 UN Summit on the formation of a global partnership to combat human trafficking. The document has been preserved by a significant number of co-authors (more than 40 states) representing all regions of the world, which testifies to the relevance of Belarus’ initiative and a high level of trust that our country has in consolidating international efforts to combat human trafficking," the Foreign Ministry noted.

The resolution ensures the preservation of consistent priority attention to the problem of combating human trafficking in the UN, and it is the only umbrella, universal document on this topic. It combines all the individual thematic initiatives in the field of combating human trafficking promoted by the UN states. The resolution demonstrates in practice the ability of the international community to overcome the previously existing fragmentation in the UN in this direction and serves as an additional platform for further strengthening international partnership in such an important issue.

“The resolution reflects the integral contribution of universal and regional organisations and mechanisms to combat human trafficking, including within the framework of the Inter-Agency Co-ordination Group on Combating Human Trafficking, a number of UN structures (the Committee on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime), OSCE and others. The document focuses on a number of recent major global challenges that the world community continues to face in the fight against human trafficking. In particular, attention is drawn to trends in the use of information and communication technologies for human trafficking. There is an increase in the number of migrants among victims of human trafficking. There is also an appeal to the international community to intensify measures to assist victims of human trafficking," the source said.
