“The NATO troops are already present in Ukraine I’d like to sincerely thank the representatives of these countries for taking this risk,” said the head of the Polish Foreign Ministry during a conference dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Poland’s membership in NATO.

At the same time, Radoslaw Sikorski did not explain which military personnel from which countries he refers to.

In late February, French President Emmanuel Macron said that the topic of the possible sending of Western countries’ ground forces to Ukraine was raised during a meeting in Paris, where representatives of about two dozen Western countries discussed further support for Ukraine in the conflict with Russia. According to him, the participants did not reach a consensus on this issue, but such a scenario cannot be ruled out in the future. After the conference, representatives of the majority of participating states declared they have no plans to send troops to Ukraine and, even more so, opposed their participation in hostilities against Russia.

Commenting on Macron’s statements, press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov underlined that if Western troops are sent to Ukraine, a direct military conflict between NATO and Russia will be inevitable. He added that the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance must be aware of this and ‘ask the question whether this corresponds to their interests, and most importantly, to the interests of the citizens of their countries’.
