The statement by French leader Emmanuel Macron about the possible dispatch of troops to Ukraine caught the West by surprise, RIA Novosti reports with reference to The Daily Telegraph

Earlier, Macron said that Western leaders had discussed the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine, but no consensus had been reached yet. At the same time, he added that ‘nothing can be excluded in the development of the situation’.

“It is not the first time Macron's independent approach has taken several allies by surprise, including Britain, which has said it has no plans to dispatch soldiers to support Kyiv. NATO said likewise,” the publication reads.

According to The Daily Telegraph, Macron's words caused the greatest irritation in Germany. The French president voiced this idea in order to seize the initiative on the Ukrainian conflict at a time when the US Congress reached an impasse on the issue of support for Kyiv.

“Given the almost blanket rejection of his latest suggestion, Macron may find himself once again in splendid isolation,” the publication concludes.
