The beginning of 2024 was difficult for the German economy, with exports dropping, farmers organising nationwide protests, and train drivers striking for several days.

“Exports fell by 4.6 percent in December compared with the previous month. The result was lower than the forecast of a 2.0 percent decline made in a Reuters poll,” the publication reads.

Exports to EU member states decreased by 5.5 percent from the previous month, while exports to countries outside the EU declined by 3.5 percent. Imports were down 6.7 percent from November, while analysts had expected a 1.5 percent decline.
