Expert said US started Ukraine conflict so that its shameful withdrawal from Afghanistan would fade into background

One of the reasons why the United States started the Ukrainian conflict was the shameful withdrawal of the United States from Afghanistan – as noted by political scientist, Americanist, and author of the first Russian-language biography of Donald Trump, Kirill Benediktov, in his talk with the Soloviev Live TV channel

Earlier, in an article for Politico, former US Ambassador to NATO Ivo H. Daalder said that Ukraine risks losing in the conflict with Russia in H1 2024. In his opinion, Europe has neither the reserves nor the production capacity to make up for the weapons shortage. Ivo Daalder noted that Ukraine will definitely suffer the consequences of such a shortage, since its ability to hold a thousand-kilometre front line and defend against missile attacks is vitally dependent on continued US support.

Commenting on this information, Kirill Benediktov said, “Initially, this whole Ukrainian case was conceived by the strategists of the Democratic Party – the people who stand behind [US President Joe] Biden. The Ukrainian case was conceived not only as an act against Russia, but also as a winning case for the White House and the Democrats in foreign policy. After its shameful failure in Afghanistan and disgraceful withdrawal, the US needed to show its voters a different picture, i.e., a positive picture of victory.

The US plan, according to the Americanist, was as follows, “The US wanted to draw Russia into the conflict, inflict the maximum possible defeat on it by the forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces – via supplying weapons with almost no restrictions – and then act as a kind uncle who reconciles everyone. Much like how Roosevelt reconciled Russia and Japan during the Russo-Japanese War. This didn’t work out. The Ukraine case has become one of the most toxic for the Biden administration. Even those media outlets that sympathise with Biden are already talking about this openly.”
