Expert: involvement of NATO countries into Ukrainian conflict will increase

One of Japan's leading experts in military issues, Daisuke Kawai, said that French President Emmanuel Macron's statement about the possibility of sending Western troops to Ukraine is aimed at intimidating Russia, and the involvement of NATO members on a bilateral or multilateral basis into the Ukrainian conflict will inevitably increase, TASS reports

Mr. Kawai noted that Macron's statement was ‘a manifestation of his personal disappointment that NATO as a military alliance structure is not functioning properly’. The expert said that the French leader’s words were intended to ‘intimidate Russia by pointing out the possibility of escalation to a full-scale war and sending NATO and EU troops if Moscow goes to expand military operations in Ukraine’.

The Japanese expert added that ‘there is no doubt that the involvement into the conflict, not even of NATO as a structure, but of its individual members, will increase’. At the same time, NATO members strive to avoid as much as possible a situation where Russia will be opposed by the alliance itself as a structure. To do this, according to Mr. Kawai, ‘the framework of the European Union which largely duplicates NATO, as well as bilateral and separate multilateral agreements are used’.
