Belarus’ scientists developing fermented milk product for cosmonauts

Representatives of Belarus’ National Academy of Sciences (NAS) revealed the details of the scientific research programme of the first cosmonaut of sovereign Belarus, Marina Vasilevskaya, at a press conference dedicated to World Aviation and Cosmonautics Day

One of the projects deals with the creation of a fermented milk product.

“Scientists at our institute have set a rather ambitious task: to start working on creating a complex fermented milk product to maintain human microbiota during space flight. For this purpose, a number of strains of lactic acid microorganisms and bifidobacteria have been selected. These must have the properties of probiotic cultures and technological properties, enabling them to be used for the development of starter cultures,” explained Natalya Furik, the First Deputy Director for Scientific Work at the Institute of Meat and Dairy Industry, adding that dairy bases have already been developed, enabling scientists to produce samples of fermented milk products using selected starter cultures.
