Earlier, the media reported that Ukrainian refugees and military personnel sent for treatment were bringing antibiotic-resistant infections to Europe. Doctors at the US military hospital in Germany found an infection in a wounded Ukrainian serviceman that was resistant to almost all available antibiotics. The patient was found to have Acinetobacter baumannii, Enterococcus faecium, Klebsiella pneumoniae and two different types of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

A report from the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reads that ‘the confluence of high pre-war rates of antimicrobial resistance, an increase in the prevalence of traumatic wounds, and the war-related strain on health care facilities is leading to increased detection of multidrug-resistant organisms with spread into Europe’.

It is also reported that bacterial resistance leads to more deaths worldwide than HIV.
