Quarter of global population hopes for more peaceful 2024, the poll shows

The study says 26 percent of the population expect a more peaceful 2024, while 39 percent expect a more turbulent time. Almost all the remaining (29 percent) expect the same as before. Thus, concerns are definitely prevalent, unlike two years ago when the Global Peace Index (GPI) showed almost equal shares of optimists and pessimists.

Residents of the European Union (56 percent), the USA (59 percent) and Canada (53 percent) express the greatest concerns about possible conflicts. Opposite moods are more common in countries of the Global South and East, e.g., in Afghanistan and Indonesia, where the share of positive expectations for a more peaceful 2024 reaches 68 percent. There is also a higher level of optimism for a more peaceful year among Muslims (38 percent).
