Opinion: EU rapidly losing its position

The European Union is becoming less influential in the sphere of world relations, and the degradation of its elite is a reason for that – as noted Oleg Romanov, the Chairman of the Belaya Rus Republican Public Association, a member of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus, in his talk with Alfa Radio

According to Mr. Romanov, Europe’s role increased after the USSR collapse, and it has been a centre of power on a planetary scale for many years. That process was also facilitated by the creation of the European Union and the introduction of the European currency as one of the world's ones.

“We can now see that the EU is rapidly losing these positions, and it is being less respected in political terms. A visit of German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock to India in March was very indicative: in New Delhi, she was welcomed only by an airfield attendant from the Indian side. This can be compared with the recent reception of the Belarusian President in China; everything there was organised according to the highest protocol level of the visit, and the importance of the Belarusian leader’s arrival was emphasised,” the expert noted.

Commenting on the reasons of the EU’s loss of its influence, Mr. Romanov stressed, “One of the biggest of them is rooted in the degeneration of Europe's elite. The latter is becoming less capable and less pragmatic. This can be judged by the level of their cultural development, by the scale of their personalities, by the comprehension of the tasks they face. After all, these elites are now no match for the European leaders who were in power in the 1980-1990s. People can be treated differently, but they defended national interests then. Whose interests are being defended by the current EU leaders at present? This is a serious question. At the elite level, modern Europe is very powerfully ideologically indoctrinated, it is guided mostly by the anti-values that have been imposed on it. Moreover, the European elite has a very poor understanding of the processes that are taking place in the world now, and the relevant decision-making follows.”

In addition, as noted by Mr. Romanov, there are other processes in the EU that negatively affect unification. “These include a change in the ethnic composition, a more active migration erosion of Europe’s civilisational identity, and a decrease in the quality of many social processes. This generally leads to the fact that Europe is transforming into a less independent subject of world politics,” he added.
