Opinion: Constitution is Belarus’ struggle for the right to live its life without looking at others

In the event of the destruction of the constitutional order, citizens will not be protected and will become dependent on the main patrons of velvet revolutions – as stated by Aleksei Avdonin, an analyst of the Belarusian Institute for Strategic Studies, in his talk with Alfa Radio

Belarus celebrates Constitution Day on March 15th. The Basic Law was adopted in the country in 1994, and amendments and additions were made to it following the results of republican referendums in 1996 and 2004. On February 27th, 2020, another referendum was held, and Belarusians adopted the updated Constitution.

“Constitution Day is a great holiday. It is important to understand that the Basic Law is an agreement between the country’s citizens and the state on the most important issues. In Belarus’ Constitution, the man and his life are of the highest value,” Mr. Avdonin said.

The expert added that destructive forces are now acting against sovereign states – such as Belarus, Russia, China and others, “The attention of our opponents is directed precisely at the Constitution. The opposition is determined to destroy the constitutional order. They are trying to sow distrust between society and the authorities. Such attempts can be viewed as the destruction of the basic principles of the Constitution. In this case, citizens will no longer be protected and become dependent on the main patrons of velvet revolutions. The Constitution is our struggle for the right to live our own life and not to be guided by others’.”
