Expert: Belarus keen on unification processes within BRICS
The BRICS summit will be held in Russia’s Kazan on October 22nd-24th. Director of the Centre for European Integration, political scientist Yuri Shevtsov shared with the sb.by portal how effectively this largest international association is developing and what hopes Belarus pin on it.
“Based on the organisation’s growing role in building a new, more just and equitable world order, the upcoming summit will be a notable event in international life. This meeting is important for our country and the whole world. One of the BRICS’ tasks is to create a new payment system and even its own currency – an alternative to the US Dollar and the Euro. At the current stage, this mainly refers to increasing the share of national currencies in the trade settlements of the BRICS members. Many expect significant steps in this direction from the forthcoming event. It is still unclear what will be decided, but the topic of adopting a fairly rigid algorithm to reduce the role of the American currency in world trade has begun to appear in the media. We’ll see what will be adopted, but this topic is being discussed. On the other hand, the BRICS community itself was founded by a relatively small number of countries, enabling them initially to make decisions by consensus. The situation is changing now,” the expert explained.
