New protests may begin on Polish border because of queues

As a result of the long inaction of the Polish authorities, there are huge queues of trucks up to 60km long to leave Poland, and the situation is getting worse. If the Polish side does not stop ignoring the problem, protests may erupt at the border because of queues – as reported by the State Border Committee of Belarus in its Telegram channel.

According to the Belarusian border department, the Polish media report that the roads at the Kukuryki checkpoint are blocked by heavy trucks. “Such situations lead to tragic events. In one of these cases, a woman died because the ambulance stood in a traffic jam for two hours,” added the State Border Committee.

It is reported that Polish carriers have repeatedly appealed to trade unions to intervene and solve the problem. “They blame the Polish control services, which ‘...perform their official duties at an insufficient pace’. Moreover, drivers say that the situation is becoming unbearable, including because of the deteriorating weather and the lack of sanitary infrastructure,” the State Border Committee said.

“The trade union underlines that if the problem is ignored by the Polish authorities, the negative mood of the people will only grow and will inevitably lead to new protests,” the Belarusian border department concluded.

Meanwhile, mobile heated tents for truck drivers who stand in line at the border with the EU were set up in Belarus by rescuers together with representatives of the Belarus Red Cross Society.
