Media report Taiwanese don’t want to serve in the army and sacrifice themselves in conflict with China

Taiwanese consider it a waste of time to serve in the army, where the soldiers ‘are not taught to fight’ and see no reason to sacrifice themselves in the event of a conflict with China, RIA Novosti reports

The Wall Street Journal reported that among the inhabitants of the island, service in the armed forces is not considered prestigious or attractive. Wang Zhongwei, a Taiwanese interviewed by the newspaper, is due to enlist in the army in the coming weeks. He stated that, like most young Taiwanese men, he is not looking forward to it. Wang Zhongwei thinks the service is a waste of time, “It doesn’t matter to me if China takes over. Our families still came here from China.”

The publication notes that most young people do not see much point in sacrificing their lives, given the enormous power of Beijing.

The situation around Taiwan deteriorated significantly after a visit to the island in early August 2022 by then-Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi. China, which considers the island one of its provinces, condemned Pelosi’s visit, seeing in this move US support for Taiwanese separatism, and held large-scale military drills.
