Media: Berlin intends to renew EU relations with Türkiye to solve migration problems
Germany plans to revive the EU’s ties with Türkiye to solve the problem of migration – as reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the Politico publication
Media reports that Germany, which received a quarter of all EU asylum applications in 2022, specifically wants to restore EU ties with Türkiye.
Politico claims that Berlin intends to renew EU relations with Türkiye, hoping that this will help reduce the number of cases of unauthorised border crossings. According to the edition, Germany also wants the EU to improve trade relations with Türkiye.
“Erdogan has been re-elected and this should give the EU an opportunity to take another look at its relationship with Türkiye. For us, it’s an issue of putting the EU-Türkiye relationship back on the agenda… to perhaps revive it if all parties are willing to commit to it,” the material; said.
As noted in the draft decisions of the European Council, the European Commission will have to report on the state of relations between the EU and Türkiye in order to ‘act in a strategic and far-sighted manner’.
