Deputy: updated Military Doctrine based on assessment of military-political situation around Belarus

Military Doctrine is the essence of views on ensuring military security. The main goal of the Military Doctrine is to prevent war on the territory of our country and against the people of Belarus – as stated by Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee on National Security of the House of Representatives Aleksandr Markevich

“Military security today is directly related to the sphere of national security. In my opinion, it is very important that the updated document envisages a new chapter, based on the allied obligations, primarily, ensuring security within the framework of the CSTO, the Union State, and other agreements with foreign states. Of course, the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus is a serious emphasis and factor in deterring aggression against our country in issues of defence and national security. All these aspects are addressed in the updated Military Doctrine.”

According to the parliamentarian, the updated Military Doctrine will help ensure that the Belarusian people continue to be masters of their land, enabling our country to develop and enabling us continue to come out with peaceful initiatives and implement them in practice.

“The Military Doctrine proceeds from modern challenges and threats, being based on an assessment of the military-political situation around our country, which has changed dramatically in recent years. We see that challenges and threats against Belarus have intensified, and the militarisation of the border area is increasing. Moreover, the policy pursued by neighbouring states towards Belarus and the Union State by our opponents and Western countries forces us to react and take effective measures.”

Aleksandr Markevich drew attention to the fact that the system of international relations has changed radically, and therefore each state chooses a path for itself based on its national interests to ensure all areas of national security, including military security. Our country is no exception in this issue, so an adjustment to the Military Doctrine is necessary.

“The updated Military Doctrine will be adopted at the Belarusian People’s Congress, where all segments of the Belarusian population will be presented. This is an important point. It’s key that the conditions for maintaining sovereignty and independence are spelled out there.”
