"I have to agree that no significant progress has been achieved at these negotiations [of Russia and Ukraine – BelTA’s remark]. Nevertheless, there was a certain advance during the three rounds of meetings. Importantly, the sides meet and talk – trying to understand each other. Unfortunately, it happens so that – while negotiating – they find some points of contact but, upon returning home, at least one of the sides may have a drastically changed position again. We understand why this is happening. In any case, it is very important that now there is at least a desire to talk to each other," Mr. Makei said.

The Foreign Minister also commented on the main obstacle to reaching agreements, “I am deeply convinced that the key obstacle in resolving the current conflict situation is the position of the West which is now trying to drill the most modern weapons into Ukraine, while sending mercenaries there contrary to all international rules, treaties and agreements – thus adding fuel to this conflict, as the Chinese Foreign Minister said some time ago."

Mr. Makei believes the most important problem is that the West does not want to understand Russia's concerns related to ensuring security in the region and repeated promises of NATO’s non-expansion eastwards.

"Nevertheless, there is a key to resolving this conflict. It does exist. I think that, firstly, the participating sides need to get rid of external advisers and, secondly, to try to show sincere interest in finding a compromise solution based on a balance of interests," Belarus’ Foreign Minister stressed.
