Lukashenko clearly explained the need for Belarusian People’s Congress

During today’s meeting on bringing certain laws in line with the updated Constitution, the President explained the essence of the stabilising role of the Belarusian People’s Congress. In particular, the Head of State recalled that we already have the experience of 2020 and, for various reasons, it will not be the same as before.

“People need to understand that it won’t be easy. They will not give us a quiet life, even if we all want it. So, the question arises: what if? What if we face another mess-up and confusion? In 2020, there was an attempt of an external rebellion, external influence on the country. This is the main thing. And inside there were several thousand people who succumbed to this. What if there is an internal conflict? Yes, it will be heated from the outside, but the main reason and the main acting forces will be inside. We didn’t have it. But it could happen, especially now, when generations are changing, when, naturally, the power will change, including the President. If such internal reasons for a clash appear, are we going to fight against each other? It shouldn’t happen,” Aleksandr Lukashenko underlined.

Obviously, it is necessary to have a mechanism that will not allow such a scenario. According to the President, the Belarusian People’s Congress is such a mechanism, “If only some kind of conflict emerges, the parties are excited, the branches of power begin to bend in different directions, which passes into society, threatening civil war – what will happen then? And then there will be the Belarusian People’s Congress. People should understand that there is a body that will meet and make a decision. I say this so that our people have not experienced the civil war and civil confrontation. Many people may ask what for we need this and maybe we don’t need it. God willing, we don’t need it. But anything in life is possible. It costs the state almost nothing. 1,200 people (the number of members of the Belarusian People’s Congress) working in their places, arrive and put an end to the confrontation. Therefore, people should understand that we are looking to the future. God willing, this confrontation does not happen, but if it does, we will decide it at the people’s veche [a popular assembly to discuss important matters facing the community].”

The President noted that every citizen of Belarus should perceive the Belarusian People’s Congress as their own representative body.

“If something suddenly happens, the main question will be solved there. This is what people should understand,” Aleksandr Lukashenko added.
