It’s reported that the Japanese-American drills took place east of the south-western island of Kyushu. They are aimed to demonstrate the joint readiness of Japan and the United States to respond to any aggravation of the situation against the backdrop of another North Korean launch. From the American side, two F-15C fighters and a KC-135 refuelling aircraft were involved in the exercises, and from Japan – four F-2 fighters.

Earlier, the media reported that North Korea launched what Japan believes is an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The missile flew for 74 minutes (a record among all North Korean launches) to an altitude of 6,000km and range of 1,000km.
