Exports of Belarus’ biotechnological products more than doubled

At a press conference at the National Press Centre, Director of the State Research and Production Association Chemical Synthesis and Biotechnology, Doctor of Biological Sciences, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Prof. Emilia Kolomiets spoke about the institution’s achievements in recent years and shared statistics on product sales

The Chemical Synthesis and Biotechnology Association unites eight organisations whose products are widely used in the country and abroad. Industry monitoring shows that ‘in 2021, 393 million units of products were produced while in 2022 this figure almost doubled and reached 626 million’. According to Emilia Kolomiets, the main production segments include medicines, dietary supplements, vaccines, enzymes, amino acids, etc.

According to the expert, there is a gradual increase in exports. In 2021, $23.4m of products were supplied to consumers while the figure rose to $54.8m last year. As far as the sectoral structure of exports is concerned, these are mainly agricultural biotechnologies, accounting for 60.4 percent. Food and industrial biotechnologies occupy 36.9 percent, followed by biopharmaceuticals and biomedicine with 2.7 percent. Moreover, the share of biotechnological products in total GDP has increased significantly, “In 2021, it stood at 0.22 percent, in 2022 – 0.33 percent,” summed up Emilia Kolomiets.
