Expert on why talks on Ukraine unlikely to take place in Belarus: they’re afraid of losing leverage

The opponents of Belarus and Russia are doing their best to prevent negotiations on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine from being organised on the territory of Belarus – as noted by political analyst Aleksei Dzermant in his talk with Alfa Radio

Mr. Dzermant noted that Belarus has repeatedly demonstrated its readiness to provide a platform for peace talks between Moscow and Kiev, “If someone denies the positive, constructive role of Belarus, they are doing so for malicious reasons. Their goal is to prevent the parties from reaching an agreement and obstruct the negotiation process. That’s why they are trying to exclude Belarus.”

According to the expert, it is important to listen to the voice of reason.

“Geographically, Belarus is close by, being located between the parties to the conflict, so let’s get started! However, the enemies of Belarus and Russia will do everything to prevent the negotiation process from taking place on Belarusian territory. They are afraid of losing their leverage, including over the Ukrainian leadership. Therefore, I am rather pessimistic. We are ready, but hostile forces will do everything in their power to interfere,” the political analyst explained.

He noted that US support for Ukraine is decreasing, which is positive for our region as it means fewer weapons and less fuel for conflict, “This trend cannot yet be considered stable, but there are certain reasons for optimism.”

“The dialogue is ongoing; the parties are interacting and have found common ground. However, humanitarian exchanges do not guarantee an end to the war. Judging by the memoranda presented by the Russian and Ukrainian sides, there is no sign of compromise. Moscow and Kiev cannot agree on a vision for the future,” the expert noted.

The political scientist added that, preserving the state is not a priority for the Ukrainian authorities, “The Kiev elite is primarily concerned with preserving their personal power and capital. Therefore, it is in their interest to continue the war.”
