China’s three major telecom operators – China Telecommunications Corporation (China Telecom), China Mobile Limited and China United Network Communications Group (China Unicom) – are building one of the most advanced and longest-running subsea cable networks in the world.

The cable would connect Hong Kong to the Chinese island province of Hainan before making its way to Singapore, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and France, the agency said.

China’s HMN Technologies will manufacture and lay the cable, which would cost about $500m to complete.

The project is designed to compete with a US plan to lay a cable that would connect Singapore to France and pass-through Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and half a dozen other nations.
