Ambassador of Indonesia revealed plans to develop relations with Belarus in educational sphere

Indonesia plans to send a group of young people to Belarus next year to study at local universities – as informed by Jose Antonio Morato Tavares, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus, before the opening ceremony of the Indonesian Language and Culture Centre at Minsk’s State Linguistic University

The diplomat noted that the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Indonesia have been developing relations for 30 years, “Co-operation embraces various spheres, including politics, economics, cultural and social issues, and education. Speaking about politics, we can note the official visit of President Aleksandr Lukashenko to Jakarta. It demonstrates the high level of relations between our countries.”

When asked of the economic results, the diplomat said that the trade turnover between the countries amounted to $300m. Describing the relations between Belarus and Indonesia, Jose Antonio Morato Tavares emphasised the co-operation in the field of education, “We are actively developing liaisons: eight Indonesian higher education institutions are already co-operating with Belarus. Indonesia also grants scholarships to foreign citizens, and students from Belarus have also received them.”

The diplomat added that he had met with the leadership of the Belarusian State University, and the issues of interaction were discussed. “We intend to send students to Belarus next year to study at the expense of the Indonesian Government so that they understand the culture and history of Belarus,” he said.

Answering the question on the prospects of relations between the countries, Jose Antonio Morato Tavares noted that the choice of direction for their development depends on high-level decisions, “Ministers can develop these relations at their level as well. We can further create working groups, and so on – thus expanding co-operation in other areas.”
