Zakharova said sending Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine would damage Russian-US relations

If the United States makes the decision to supply Kiev with Tomahawk long-range missiles, it will do irreparable damage to the Russian-US relations, according to the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, TASS reports

“The relevant decision by the US administration, I repeat, if it is ultimately adopted, will not only lead to an escalating cycle of confrontation but will also inflict irreparable damage to the Russian-US relations, which have only recently started to show signs of renewed bilateral dialogue,” the diplomat said, when commenting on US President Donald Trump’s remarks that he ‘sort of made a decision’ regarding sending Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine.

As Ms. Zakharova pointed out, Russia hopes that Washington will hear its signals on this issue. “We are closely following the developments surrounding this issue and urge maximum restraint when dealing with this highly sensitive topic, which could greatly complicate efforts to find solutions regarding Ukraine. We hope that Washington will hear our messages,” she emphasised.

The Russian Foreign Ministry’s official spokeswoman also noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin had clearly expressed Moscow’s stance on such risky actions, “If these measures are carried out, despite the fact that we have significantly enhanced our missile defence capabilities, cruise missiles remain a powerful weapon. Their acquisition by the Kiev regime would mark a new and serious escalation in the Ukrainian crisis. This, of course, will not alter the balance of power on the battlefield. The main issue is not so much that the Armed Forces of Ukraine would have Tomahawks at their disposal, but that their use would be impossible without the direct involvement of the US military personnel.”
