Volodin: European states will lose sovereignty if do not leave EU

The abolition of the principle of joint decision-making and the rejection of the right of veto for the EU member states means that the opinions of some countries and their citizens will no longer be taken into account. As stated by the Speaker of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Vyacheslav Volodin, the EU member states that plan to preserve their sovereignty today have no other way but to leave the European Union, TASS reports

“Millions of Europeans will be deprived of their right to vote, and their states will completely lose their sovereignty… If the states that are now members of the European Union want to preserve their sovereignty and defend the interests of their citizens, they have only one solution possible: to exit from the European Union,” Mr. Volodin stressed, adding that the European Parliament’s proposal to seriously reform the European Union means that ‘European unity is collapsing’.

“Among the approved decisions is the abolition of the principle of joint decision-making for the most important issues. Differently speaking, it is proposed to abandon the right of veto of the EU members. The opinion of individual states, and therefore their citizens, will no longer be taken into account," Mr. Volodin noted.

According to the Speaker of the State Duma, the situation with sanctions imposed against Moscow has demonstrated that the EU countries have no common opinion on this issue. “That is why a necessity arises to search for other forms of decision-making, putting aside the principle that has existed for years,” he explained, noting that steps of the kind will lead to the loss of sovereignty by the EU member states.

At the same time, Mr. Volodin wondered who would be responsible ‘to the citizens of a particular country in the event of price increases, unemployment, problems in the economy as a result of the decisions made without taking into account their opinions’.

Meanwhile, prices in the European Union are already growing: i.e. firewood has almost doubled in price compared to last year in Latvia, while the cost of energy for households increased by 42.4 percent in March against 2021 figures in Austria. In April, a record level of inflation was recorded in Poland, the prices of goods and consumer services rose by 12.3 percent there. Along with this, it is predicted that German beer will rise in price by 30 percent by late 2022 since brewers are now experiencing ‘a huge price pressure’.
