US plans to deploy B-52 bombers in Australia
The United States is preparing to deploy up to six nuclear-capable B-52 bombers in northern Australia. To do this, it is planned to build facilities at the Tindal air base south of the settlement of Darwin, RIA Novosti reports.
According to ABC TV channel, Washington has drawn up detailed plans for what it calls a ‘squadron operations facility’ for use during the Northern Territory dry season, an adjoining maintenance centre and a parking area for the B-52s.
“The ability to deploy the long-range bombers to Australia sends a strong message to adversaries about Washington's ability to project air power,” the US Air Force said.
Moreover, Becca Wasser of the Centre for a New American Security said that the presence of bombers that could potentially ‘attack mainland China’ could be very important in sending a signal to the PRC in connection with its possible actions against Taiwan.
According to ABC, the expansion of the Tyndall base, according to preliminary data, will cost up to $100m. Representatives of the US Air Force stressed that construction will be completed at the end of 2026.
