In a statement, senators Jeanne Shaheen and Thom Tillis said, “Despite its numerous prior public commitments, Hungary is the last remaining NATO member to have not ratified Sweden's bid [to join the bloc], and both time and patience are wearing thin."

Lawmakers stated that by its inaction Budapest ‘risks irrevocably spoiling relations’ with Washington and the North Atlantic Alliance.

In addition, the Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Ben Cardin, in a separate statement mentioned the possibility of imposing sanctions on Hungary for its conduct. He called Orban ‘the least reliable member of NATO’.
