“At least 576,000 people in the Gaza Strip – one quarter of the population – are one step away from famine. One in six children under the age of two in northern Gaza suffers from acute malnutrition and wasting,” said the UN humanitarian co-ordinator.

Ramesh Rajasingham underlined that if the situation in the Gaza Strip remains unchanged, then there are all the prerequisites for its further deterioration, “If nothing changes, a famine is imminent.”

The expert also added that lack of nutrition, overcrowding and poor sanitation can contribute to the spread of infectious diseases.

According to the Health Ministry of the Palestinian enclave as of February 21st, at least 29.3 thousand people have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the start of the Israeli operation in October 2023.
