Poll reveals more than a third of Americans have little idea of what NATO is

More than 30 percent of the people in the United States ‘don’t know’ or ‘little know’ about what NATO really is – as confirmed by a survey conducted by Redfield & Wilton Strategies commissioned by the American magazine Newsweek, RIA Novosti reports

Despite the fact that the majority of respondents stated that they are ‘significantly’ (31 percent) or ‘fairly’ (36 percent) aware of what NATO is and the role it serves, 25 percent of respondents, according to the survey, said that have superficial ideas about the military bloc. Another 9 percent were ‘not at all aware’.

The survey participants were also asked to answer whether they support continued US membership in NATO. The majority answered positively, 19 percent said they were indifferent, and 7 percent of those polled opposed.

The poll was conducted in early April 2023, surveying 1,500 eligible US voters. The errors are not given.
