Poll: health, family and love are main values for Belarusian youth

Alesya Solovei, the Chairperson of the Council of Young Scientists at the Belarusian National Academy of Sciences’ Sociology Institute, has commented on the results of a recently held nationwide poll

“Young people represent the most active socio-demographic group with a high level of mobility, who are in the process of mastering new social roles, intensive socialisation, adaptation and self-identification, searching for their own place in life. Due to socio-psychological and biological features, specific interests and needs due to the age period experienced, the younger generation has creative and intellectual potential and represents not only a significant human resource for the development of society, but also for the scientific community and the generation of new scientific ideas,” the specialist said. “It is during their student years that young men and ladies can take their first steps into science, become interested in research, complete course and diploma projects, and participate in student conferences. Identifying, supporting and developing the intellectual capabilities of talented youth is the best way to replenish the country’s scientific staff with a new generation of scientists.”

As Ms. Solovei noted, based on the results of a nationwide poll conducted in April 2023, health (75.4 percent), family (61.6 percent) and love (52.6 percent) are mostly valued by Belarusian young people. The list of preferences also includes financial security (49.5 percent), children (47.4 percent), interesting work and profession (43.4 percent), peace of mind and comfort (42.1 percent), friendship (41.8 percent), and self-realisation (39.7 percent). Knowledge of the world and decent education are significant for 30.2 percent of youngsters.
