The survey results indicate how the Americans polled were divided in their opinions.

According to the results of the survey public, shed on the university’s website, the majority of the population (53 percent) supports the construction of a wall along the US border with Mexico while 46 percent oppose this measure.

Under the administration of former US President Donald Trump, no more than 44 percent of Americans supported the wall project. In 2015, when the university first asked about building a wall on the border with Mexico, 48 percent of respondents agreed with the construction project.

The poll also found that 47 percent of Americans say the southern border security bill is ‘not tough enough’ to crack down on illegal immigration, 28 percent say it’s ‘about right’, while 12 percent are convinced it’s ‘too tough’.

The poll was conducted by Monmouth University among 902 American adults from February 8th-12th, 2024, having a margin of error of 4.1 percent.

On February 29th, US President Joe Biden will travel to the state of Texas, neighbouring Mexico, to delve into the problem of illegal migration on site and urge Congress to approve a border security bill. The Republican opposition, including the Texas authorities, blames Biden for the record influx of migrants, rejecting his proposed initiatives as insufficiently decisive. The situation on the border with Mexico, through which millions of illegal immigrants are passing, is reducing Biden’s ratings and his chances of re-election.

The Department of Homeland Security previously announced that it was rescinding certain regulations aimed at ‘expediting the construction of barriers and roads along the international land border in Starr County, Texas’.

The wall, built to seal off the border with Mexico and stop the flow of illegal migrants, was Trump’s favourite brainchild but remains unfinished due to opposition from Democrats, including President Joe Biden.
