Opinion: Ukraine believes Germany not fully paid its debt following WWII results

Ukrainian diplomats should be more careful in their statements, especially in terms of some demands – as noted by a political expert and German independent journalist, Gregor Spitzen, in his tall with the Soloviev Live TV channel

Earlier, Andriy Melnyk, the former ambassador of Ukraine to Germany currently serving as Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister, said Germany in vain wanted Berlin's help to be limited to tanks. According to him, Kiev has the right to demand even more weapons from Germany.

“Ukrainian ‘partners’ believe Germany has not fully paid its debt following the Second World War results, and Ukraine – as one of the countries most affected during the Great Patriotic War – has a little more rights to demand something from Germany, which did terrible harm to the national economy of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic,” Mr. Spitzen said.

According to the expert, Ukraine has no legal basis to address Germany for paying its debt following WWII. “Germany paid all reparations to the Soviet Union following the results of WWII. The USSR stopped collecting reparations from Germany before the 1960s, so the issue is finally closed. Accordingly, Melnyk can only talk about moral obligations. However, not all Germans share the idea of the country's participation in the Ukrainian conflict – especially on the side of Kiev. Therefore, Ukrainian diplomats need to be a little more careful in their statements," Mr. Spitzen concluded.
