Opinion: Belarus is at forefront of new anti-colonial movement

The collective West is trying to strangle Belarus with sanctions and restrictions, but all its attempts will fail, since the world is huge and Belarus has a lot of friends and partners – as stated by the Director General of the National Library, Vadim Gigin, in his talk with Alfa Radio

Speaking of the recent meetings of Belarus’ President Aleksandr Lukashenko, the programme host, Vadim Shepet, stated that the West failed to isolate the republic. He asked Mr. Gigin to comment, and the expert said, “Such attempts could not be successful, because we are now experiencing a transition from the unipolar world of Western hegemony to a new multipolar world. Many have probably got tired of this definition, but it’s true: the West views the world community as the United States and its satellites. Their camp involves the US, Canada, the UK, the EU, the Balkan States (as a protectorate that is joining it), Japan, and some other countries, whom they are intimidating and blackmailing to attract to their side. That's all. However, it is not the whole world! Presidents admit how American ambassadors come to them and literally twist their hands, urging them not to be friends with Russia, Belarus, China, to refuse even mutually beneficial offers from these countries. This is how isolation is being imposed. Meanwhile, this position is not shared, and the US hegemony has been challenged. Belarus is at the forefront of a new anti-colonial movement, and its position is shared by many. People are ready to co-operate with us, to support us. There is always a feedback if a country pursues a strong, independent policy. Belarus is a country of the kind.”

In addition, the expert drew attention to the ability of the Belarusian leader to see prospects where they are not obvious to everyone. “The stake on co-operation with China was placed by Aleksandr Lukashenko back in times when he was a deputy. This policy has been in place since the beginning of his presidency; at that time, many did not even believe in the development of China. Belarus took the course of co-operation with the Russian Federation when the latter was weak, during the years of Yeltsin's power. No economic benefit was in focus then, though we understood that we belong to a single civilizational community. Therefore, we witness such a support. Aleksandr Lukashenko has been making statements about a multipolar world since the late 1990s, and the whole world heard them in the 2000s, when the Head of State spoke from the UN rostrum, at the Non-Aligned Movement summit. The agenda of a new world was formulated then, and everyone is talking about it at present. This is the special historical role of our President,” Mr. Gigin stressed.
