According to Stoltenberg, the North Atlantic Alliance sees that ‘many different things are happening at the same time’ in the region.

“Of course, we see an increase in the presence of Russia. They are reopening old Soviet-era military bases. We see more of their presence in the air and at sea,” the NATO Secretary General noted. “They are improving their military capabilities, including submarines and especially more advanced weapons, by which I mean nuclear weapons.”

Stoltenberg stressed that the situation in the region ‘makes a difference’ when considering the security of NATO countries on both sides of the Atlantic. In this regard, he welcomed the decision of Finland and Sweden to join the alliance, as this will strengthen its presence in the Far North.

Earlier, Finnish Defence Minister Antti Kaikkonen said that the country intends to join NATO by late 2022.
