MPs approved bill to amend law On President of the Republic of Belarus

A draft law of the Republic of Belarus On Amendments to the Law of the Republic of Belarus On the President of the Republic of Belarus was approved in the second reading at the meeting of the tenth session of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the seventh convocation

The draft law was developed in order to bring the norms of the law On the President of the Republic of Belarus in line with the amendments and additions to Belarus’ Constitution adopted at the republican referendum on February 27th, 2022, as well as with the provisions of the law On Public Service.

Presenting the bill to the parliamentarians, Svetlana Lyubetskaya, the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Legislation, noted that the law adopted in the first reading in its initial version was finalised by the Standing Committee on Legislation, taking into account the editorial and legal-technical comments made in the working order. “The constitutional requirements for a candidate for the post of President of the Republic of Belarus have been outlined. The legal status of the President of the Republic of Belarus has been clarified, and the powers of the Head of State have been optimised, including on issues of protecting state sovereignty, national security and territorial integrity of the Republic of Belarus, ensuring the functioning of the supreme judicial bodies and the Central Election Commission of Belarus, and appeals to the Constitutional Court with relevant proposals,” she explained.

The bill adopted by the MPs also ensures the harmonisation of the Belarusian law On the President of the Republic of Belarus with the norms of the Electoral Code, the Code on the Judicial System and the Status of Judges, the laws On the Status of House of Representatives’ Deputes and Members of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, On the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, On the Belarusian People’s Congress, and On Public Service.
