She made this statement at the government’s Chigi Palace after her first meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, “I reaffirm Italy’s commitment to NATO and the common challenges faced by the North Atlantic Alliance at this delicate moment.”

The Italian PM stressed that her country strongly supports the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and freedom of Ukraine.

“The political cohesion of the alliance and our full commitment to supporting the Ukrainian cause are, from our point of view, the best response that NATO allies can give,” she added.

She stated that work to strengthen the alliance should be a priority. According to her, Europe should be a strong pillar of the bloc in order to make it ‘even stronger and more capable of responding to threats from any direction’.

As Meloni explained, the ‘NATO-EU strategic partnership’ is of paramount importance. She noted that at a meeting with Stoltenberg, they discussed how to expand co-operation between the two organisations on defence issues. The head of the Italian government also noted that special attention was paid to problems related to the situation on the southern flank of NATO.
