Media: Ukraine lowered its minimum conscription age to 25

On April 3rd, the Ukrainian authorities lowered the minimum draft-eligible age for men from 27 to 25 years. The relevant bills were signed by the country's President Vladimir Zelensky, The Associated Press reports.

An analyst at the Centre for United Actions of Ukraine, Oksana Zabolotna, noted that the new laws will allow the cancellation of some draft privileges, and an online register for recruits will also be created. According to the agency, Zelensky took almost a year to sign the three bills into law, perhaps reflecting how unpopular such a move might be.

“Conscription has been a sensitive matter amid Ukraine’s growing shortages of infantry and ammunition. Some Ukrainians worry that lowering the minimum conscription age to 25 and taking more young adults out of the workforce could backfire by further harming the war-ravaged economy,” the publication reads.

Vladimir Zelensky stated he was not ready to say publicly how many new conscripts the Ukrainian army will need.
