Media: Musk-owned SpaceX creating network of spy satellites for US intelligence
Billionaire Elon Musk’s SpaceX is building a network of hundreds of spy satellites under a secret contract with American intelligence, Reuters reports
The network is being built by SpaceX’s Starshield division as part of a $1.8bn contract signed in 2021 with the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), which operates spy satellites.
“The plans show the extent of SpaceX’s involvement in US intelligence and military projects and illustrate a deeper Pentagon investment into vast, low-Earth orbiting satellite systems aimed at supporting ground forces.,” the publication reads.
If successful, the programme would significantly enhance the ability of the US government and military to quickly detect potential targets almost anywhere on the globe, the sources said.
