Marzalyuk: law on Poles’ special status will limit Ukraine's sovereignty

If the draft law on the special status of Polish citizens on the territory of Ukraine, recently submitted by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the Verkhovna Rada, comes into force, it is possible to unambiguously talk about the limit of our southern neighbour’s sovereignty. This opinion was expressed by Professor Igor Marzalyuk, the Chairman of the Standing Commission on Education, Culture and Science of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, Doctor of Historical Sciences, and corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

“Such a normative act means that the state provides the neighbouring country with the opportunity to directly influence its course. Of course, this is done under the pretext of necessary assistance to Ukraine in the process of its military confrontation with Russia,” the deputy noted.

According to the expert, a new legal phenomenon is being de facto created before our eyes: a single Polish-Ukrainian citizenship. “What does it mean? That a new state formation is emerging, and this, in turn, implies the legitimisation of Poland’s ability to take part in military clashes on the territory of Ukraine, to influence the activities of its armed forces, intelligence, and to control various sectors of its economy,” believes the Belarusian parliamentarian.”
