Lukashenko on FIFA World Cup: I always root for Brazil, and then for Argentina

During the conversation with journalists, the President of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, spoke about his fan preferences during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the final match between the national teams of Argentina and France, BelTA reports

“I always root for Brazil, and then for Argentina. This isn’t even philosophy for them; this is something sacred for them. They are all in football,” the President said.

He said that he watched the whole match and Argentina deserved to win.

The President of Russia also shared his impressions of the match, saying that he watched its second half: from the moment when the score was 2:2.

“Later, of course, I could not refrain from calling the President [of Argentina] and congratulated him. I know that Argentina is a football country. People there are very passionate about football, they like their players, including the leading ones. I think they deserved this victory,” Vladimir Putin said.

The journalists asked if there would be a similar call from the President of Russia to the leader of France if this country won the World Cup? Would Macron have had a chance to hear a call from Putin?

Anticipating the response of the Russian President, Aleksandr Lukashenko joked that, most likely, the situation would have been exactly the opposite and the French leader himself would have initiated the telephone call, “He would call Vladimir Vladimirovich and happily say that they won, expecting congratulations from him.”

Meanwhile, the President of Russia answered the question of journalists in the following way, “I have business relations with many colleagues, including with the President of France. We really maintain contacts by phone, and, as you know, after the start of a special military operation, he came to Moscow on visits.”
