Lukashenko explained how grain harvest in Gomel Region could be enlarged

At a meeting on the development of Gomel Region’s agro-industrial complex, the President of Belarus drew attention to the need to develop an irrigation system in agriculture in the southern regions of the country, mentioning the experience of Tajikistan as an example: large harvests of grapes and other agricultural crops are now possible there due to proper irrigation

“Time has come for us to do this, especially in the Gomel and Brest regions,” Aleksandr Lukashenko addressed those present. “What can hamper us? We have plenty of water: Pripyat, Dnieper, Sozh [rivers] – so water is everywhere. Somewhere it is necessary to lay pipes and pump up – not only draining, but also working in the reversed direction to ensure soil moistening. We should have already started to do this. This is very important for the Gomel Region to harvest 1.5m tonnes of grain here, or maybe even 2m. You should choose fields where you get 15, 20 or 30 quintals [per hectare], irrigate them and use normal technologies, and you will then harvest 90-120 quintals. In turn, Gomselmash’s task is to give you combines that will cultivate these fields.”
