One of the questions concerned the fact that EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said that Russia, after dealing with Ukraine, would attack NATO. Aleksandr Lukashenko responded in the following way, “This is nonsense. This man is simply stupid, having nothing to do with politics. If he were smart, he would have thought like a businessman: ‘Russia and we should sort out these problems. Are we going to layer new problems on top of these troubles?’ Anyone would think like this. Do we need war today? We need to deal with it [a war in Ukraine], especially now, when the situation is favourable not only for us, but also for them, so as not to lose Ukraine. That’s how I understand it.”

The President of Belarus believes that in the coming year there is a chance to make progress in settling the conflict in Ukraine, “I think it’s the best chance. We’ll work more closely with them, enabling them to understand that this is their only chance. If they don’t use it, there will be a total collapse,” the Belarusian leader stressed.

Answering a clarifying question about the decisions – military or political – he is talking about, Aleksandr Lukashenko said, “Now it has already reached the politicians. The military are pressing. As I have always said, the military see what’s happening. The pressure is already very strong. You probably noticed from Zelenskyy’s press conference that he is beginning to understand.”

The Belarusian Head of State was also asked a question regarding security on the borders in the western direction.

“Isn’t there pressure from Poland?” asked a journalist.

“That’s all right. I used to be a border guard, so I can ensure security at the borders,” assured Aleksandr Lukashenko.
