Khrenin: Military Doctrine’s important innovation is adequacy of measures taken by the state to level of military danger

The deployment of tactical nuclear weapons on Belarusian territory is viewed an important component of preventive deterrence of potential adversaries from unleashing armed aggression against the Republic of Belarus. This is a necessary measure. Moreover, a whole separate chapter has appeared in the updated Military Doctrine, which forms the legal basis for Belarus’ actions in the event of armed aggression against the country’s allies in the CSTO and the Union State – as stated by Belarus’ Defence Minister, Lieutenant General Viktor Khrenin, at today’s briefing: Modern Approaches to Ensuring Military Security of the State, Their Implementation in New Edition of Belarus’ Military Doctrine.

Speaking about the innovations of the updated strategic document, the Defence Minister said, “We have put together and written down all our views on fulfilling Union State obligations. This has been on the surface for a long time and required implementation. A whole separate chapter has appeared, which forms the legal basis for our actions in the event of armed aggression against our allies in the CSTO and the Union State. In the same chapter, we spelled out the possibility of Belarus’ participation in peacekeeping activities under the auspices of international security organisations.

Viktor Khrenin also underlined, “An important innovation of the new Military Doctrine is the adequacy of the measures taken by the state to the level of military danger. In the updated doctrine, they are aimed at preventing an escalation of the military-political situation and defusing the situation. Most importantly, the draft Military Doctrine gives an unambiguous message: we must not allow situations where it will be too late to react.”

That’s why the focus is placed on deterring the outbreak of military conflicts, the Defence Minister explained, “It is carried out by building a system of relations that restrains the emergence of interstate contradictions, maintaining a balance of the national interests of the Republic of Belarus with the interests of other countries, ensuring stability and peaceful coexistence. And in this regard, the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of the Republic of Belarus is considered as an important component of the preventive deterrence of potential adversaries from unleashing armed aggression against the Republic of Belarus. This is our necessary measure.”
