India overtakes China in total population

India has surpassed China in terms of population by 2.9 million people, according to the latest data from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), RIA Novosti reports

India’s current population is 1.4286 billion against 1.4257 billion for China.

The age group 0-14 years in India includes 25 percent of the population, in China – 17 percent, the group 10-19 years – 18 percent and 12 percent, respectively, 10-24 years – 26 percent and 18 percent, 15-64 years – 68 percent and 69 percent, over 65 years old – 7 percent and 14 percent.

At the same time, China is doing better than India in the context of life expectancy, which in the case of women is 82 and 76 that of men. The figures for India are 74 and 71, according to the report.
