Hungarian FM: no hope for peace if communication channels with Russia are closed

If communication channels between Hungary and Russia are closed, Budapest will lose hope for peace – as stated by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto, RIA Novosti reports

“In the current conditions, the channels of communication between Hungary and Russia must remain open, because if we close them, we will literally lose hope for peace,” the official told the EFE news agency.

Szijjarto added that his country maintains pragmatic co-operation with Moscow, especially in the energy sector, because securing reliable energy supplies to Hungary is impossible without Russia.

The head of the Hungarian foreign policy department also mentioned the tense relations between Brussels and Budapest, noting that ‘serious discussions’ are underway, since Hungary holds a ‘different view of what the European Union should be compared to the Brussels bureaucrats’.

“The European Union can only be strong if the members themselves are strong, so taking away capabilities or competences from member states and transferring them to Brussels will weaken them, and the weaker the member states, the weaker the EU will be,” Szijjarto added.
