The words of the PM are quoted by Yle TV channel, “I believe that the issue may need unanimous support among MPs, e.g., between parliamentary parties. However, there are grounds for making a decision.”

Ms. Marin stressed that ‘it would not be a short process’ and ‘it would require several years’.

According to the PM, the construction of the fencing wouldn’t significantly increase tensions between Finland and Russia.

“Europe is at war. You can’t get a much more tense situation than this,” she explained.

Finland’s Border Guard previously stated that this refers to building fencing in the south-eastern part of the border with Russia within two to three years. The department plans to protect about 10-20 percent of the border, which measures 1,300km in length. The fencing can be from 130 to 260km long. Such a design can stand for about fifty years.
