Expert explained what is common in policy of Heydar Aliyev and Aleksandr Lukashenko

The role of a personality in history is tremendous, and Heydar Aliyev, whose 100th birthday has recently been celebrated in Azerbaijan, is an example of this – as stated by political expert Vadim Borovik in his talk with Alfa Radio

“Objectively speaking, the role of a personality in history is colossal. The relationships and human contacts built by a leader often enable a country to live through the most challenging periods with dignity. Heydar Aliyev is an example of that," Mr. Borovik said.

The expert recalled that Heydar Aliyev held the position of First Deputy Chairman of the USSR Council of Ministers until November 1988, “He constantly returned to his homeland, he admired Baku and observed how the city was developing. After heading sovereign Azerbaijan, he conducted a policy in such a way that the country was minimally involved in any conflicts, taking into account the territorial peculiarities and disputes that arose in relations with Armenia. Differently speaking, his leadership was worthful, he led the country away from a war. Belarus’ Head of State said that, at some moments, he had learned wisdom from him.”

Mr. Borovik added that Aleksandr Lukashenko has political wisdom today. In his congratulation on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Heydar Aliyev, the Belarusian leader noted, “I am convinced that such a patriot, whose life was focused on serving the country, will always be remembered.”

“He had the opportunity to communicate with such people who are really an epoch, history. I think it was not just a curtsy to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Heydar Aliyev; the Head of State sincerely said that he was a man of exceptional intelligence and wisdom. We appreciate our good relations with the Republic of Azerbaijan. We have always traded with dignity and supported each other in the political sphere," the expert stressed.

Mr. Borovik drew another parallel between the policies of Heydar Aliyev and Aleksandr Lukashenko, “In times of Heydar Aliyev’s leadership, there was always a very good attitude towards Russians. No one felt aggrieved, and a policy on that issue was wise. This is another parallel with Aleksandr Lukashenko, who has not been trying to build the politics on the national issue. We are developing the Belarusian language, but at the same time we are not trying to infringe on the Russians’ interests in any way.”
