Expert: BRICS is platform for the formation of new multipolarity

Belarus’ desire to join BRICS is absolutely correct and natural, and the fact that the association is expanding only underlines this – as noted by Dean of the Journalism Faculty at the Belarusian State University Aleksei Belyaev in his talk with Alfa Radio

Programme host Polina Konoga noted that starting from the new year, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Ethiopia officially became members of the organisation and the course towards BRICS expansion will continue. “The organisation is gaining weight and expanding. Is this a good trend?” she asked.

“Of course,” stressed Aleksei Belyaev. “We see that new poles of political and economic power are beginning to generate results, which reflect the real state of affairs. The fact that the West is losing its hegemony has long been clear, and real tools are being created today to counter Western hegemony. A more harmonious world order is being created, corresponding to the real weight and contribution of each state: economic, demographic, resource. BRICS is one of such platforms where the formation of a new multipolarity is taking place. The countries that have now joined BRICS have very different foreign policy orientations. Iran is known to be anti-American while, e.g., Saudi Arabia seems to be considered a serious ally of the United States in the Middle East. Nevertheless, these countries are entering into close relationships within the BRICS framework. China and India – who are rivals in many ways and strive to take the leading positions – are actually the originators of this alliance. Of course, this is an indicator that new forms of associations are needed without political bias, without attempts to bend anyone or bring someone to the knees. The world needs associations that are built on the principles of mutual respect and co-ordination of interests.”

Commenting on Belarus’ intentions to join BRICS and the SCO, the expert said that this is the call of the times, “Belarus may be admitted to the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) this year; all procedures must be regulated. Our country also submitted an application to join BRICS. Thus, Belarus participates in all these world processes of unification, the formation of a new multipolar, but global world. More precisely, I would even say, in the processes of preserving globalisation, which today the West itself is trying to curtail, because it can no longer control this globalisation and use it in its own interests. It has really gone beyond the limits of possibilities and provides other states, real leaders with emerging markets, opportunities for further development. Therefore, BRICS is our future. We must strive there and will support this initiative.”
