Chinese Foreign Ministry accused NATO Secretary General of making baseless accusations and smear attacks on China

Mr. Wenbin noted that this is not the first time the Secretary General has expressed baseless criticism of the Chinese side and carried out ‘slanderous attacks’. In this way, NATO ‘is inflating the so-called theory of a Chinese threat’.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s official added that the alliance adheres to double standards. On the one hand, it calls on alliance members to increase military spending, on the other hand, it speaks negatively about national defence and modernisation of military equipment in China.

"China adheres to a peaceful path of development, and the country’s military doctrine is defensive in nature. China maintains its nuclear force at minimum level required for national security," Mr. Wenbin said, adding that the Chinese government, unlike some member countries of the alliance, does not threaten other states and does not join various military alliances. In addition, the Chinese authorities do not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries and do not initiate trade wars.
