China’s population dropped by 2.08m in 2023

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, 9.02m new-borns were registered in the country last year, and the number of deaths amounted to 11.10m.

The male population of China reached 720.32 million, which corresponds to a decrease of 0.2 percent. In turn, the female population decreased by 0.04 percent to make 689.35m. The share of citizens of working age (from 16 to 59 years old) made 61.3 percent, which was 0.7 percentage points less than in 2022. There were 216.76 million people over the age of 65 in the country, the number of whom increased by 3.3 percent.

According to the released data, the population of Chinese cities increased by 1.2 percent in 2023 – to reach 932.67 million people. At the same time, the population in rural areas decreased by 2.8 percent and made 477 million people.

In 2022, China faced its first population decline in 60 years: in 12 months, it made 850 thousand people.
